MulchFest 2016

Treecycle!

Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10, 2016

10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Please remember to remove all lights, ornaments, and netting before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. Mulch is available at the sites marked.

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

A gracious thank you to Bohemian Beer Garden for donating hot chocolate to be served from approximately 12:30-2pm on both MulchFest days.

NYC Parks Celebrates Another Year Of Recycling Christmas Trees At Mulchfest 2015

Trees collected at MulchFest will nourish parks and gardens across the city.

New Yorkers recently celebrated the 19th annual MulchFest by recycling their Christmas trees at over 80 locations across the city. NYC Parks, partnering with the Department of Sanitation, GreeNYC, and numerous community organizations, provides New Yorkers with the opportunity to sustainably recycle their trees. Participants were also invited to take a free bag of mulch home.
Rather than turning Christmas trees into trash, New Yorkers were provided the opportunity to act sustainably and mulch their trees into wood chips. This year's MulchFest recycled nearly 30,000 trees.
Not only will NYC Parks be counting recycled trees, this year we'll also be launching our Trees Count! 2015 tree census to count every street tree on every city block. For more information on how you can volunteer, visit www.nyc.gov/parks/treescount or call 311

Location: Astoria Park Track (in Astoria Park)
Category: Fitness

Saturday, January 2, 2015
9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m.
This event repeats every week on Saturday between 9/19/2015 and 3/31/2016.
Open Run is a new community-based initiative that launched in St. Mary's Park in the Bronx on National Running Day, June 3, 2015. Through this initiative, New York Road Runners is empowering local volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC.
All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on park, but they are between 2.5-3 miles.

Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home--bag check is not provided.
  • No advance registration is required; register and sign a waiver on site
  • Open to all ages
  • Open to all experience levels; walkers are welcome
  • Strollers and dogs on leash are welcome
Volunteers help make Open Run happen every week. Each location is supported by three to eight volunteers who track the timing, marshal the course, and ensure that waivers are signed. No experience is necessary. You can sign up to be an Open Run volunteer on the location's Facebook group.

No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome!
This program is in coordination with NYC Parks' Community Parks Initiative.
