The entire process has been community-driven, inclusive, and engaging. The technology upgrades across the district, a new dog run in a neighborhood that currently lacks even one, and a playground in a where students have no official schoolyard will enrich the lives of families and children throughout Astoria.

I thank everyone who participated including facilitators, budget delegates, voting site volunteers, and all the residents who voted.
2,204 residents voted in our district this year. By comparison, the 2014 citywide Participatory Budgeting cycle reached approximately 1,700 voters per district.
Next year's cycle starts in the fall. I hope everyone participates again next year!

How Participatory Budgeting Works

The Participatory Budgeting process involves a series of meetings that feed into the city’s annual budget cycle. Hundreds of community members attended four assemblies, held in October and November throughout Astoria and Jackson Heights, and brainstormed project ideas.
Close to 100 residents volunteered to be Budget Delegates. These delegates broke into groups that worked on specific issues and transformed the initial list of 250 capital project ideas into a ballot of eighteen fully-formed proposals.
Voting took place in mid-April at sites across the district including community rooms, shopping centers, offices, schools, libraries, subway stations, and parks.

Sincerely,Costa

Costa Constantinides represents the New York City Council's 22nd District, which includes his native Astoria along with parts of Woodside, East Elmhurst, and Jackson Heights. He serves as the chair the City Council's Sub-Committee on Libraries and sits on seven standing committees: Civil Service & Labor, Contracts, Cultural Affairs, Environmental Protection, Oversight & Investigations, Sanitation, and Transportation.

Anxiety Builds as New York City Parks Await a Leader

Anxiety Builds as New York City Parks Await a Leader http://nyti.ms/1e16w1k

...  “On the day to day, Liam and his team are really outstanding and up to the task,” said Councilman Mark Levine, who is chairman of the parks committee. “So I don’t think the department is suffering in the operational sense. But there are many policy questions, like how to deal with the conservancies and issues of inequity, which are complicated and political and require permanent leadership to address.”  ...
“I’d certainly like to see a parks commissioner who is sensitive to the urgency of outer-borough park needs,” said Eric A. Seiff  ...  “The big events are cranking up, the ball fields are opening and the beaches need to be ready,” said Mr. Benepe, now a senior official at the nonprofit
Trust for Public Land . “Getting up to speed with all that is not going to happen easily.”
The parks budget will also be debated this spring. Mr. de Blasio has released a preliminary city budget; a more detailed plan is due in April.
New Yorkers for Parks, an advocacy group, voiced frustration at the continued vacancy in the commissioner’s office. “Now is the time when we’d like to be working with the parks commissioner to develop funding priorities,” said Tupper Thomas, the executive director. “It’s tough to advocate for a better budget without those priorities in place.”
