Astoria Park : a really happy place [NECSI.edu]

Astoria Park is a really happy place, so says this study. [WHA weekend link]

www.necsi.edu/research/social/newyork

'Tweets are most positive near public parks  ...
...  The report, "Sentiment in New York City:
A High Resolution Spatial and Temporal View," by Karla Bertrand, Maya Bialik, Kawandeep Virdee, Andreas Gros and Yaneer Bar-Yam, created an algorithm to automatically classify tweets as positive or negative, and use their geotags and time information to paint a map.'

'None of this is surprising: who wouldn't be happy amidst the greenery of a public park  '

New York's happiness, according to Twitter. The lighter the blue, the happier—the brighter

the project

One of the goals of increased community involvement
in the planning and execution of Shore Fest is being
realized this year with the inclusion of
additional community partners.

This is an important  milestone in the growth of
Shore Fest as a  community building project and
in the creation of stakeholders in re-imagining the
use of Shore Boulevard.

This year, two of the communities brightest stars,

We Heart Astoria and Build It Green, will bring their unique sensibilities to the event.
August 4th is We Heart Astoria Food FestAugust 11 is Build it Green Day.
They join valued partners the NY City Parks and Recreation Department
and Green Shores NYC. Shore Fest is an NYC Dept. of Transportation
 Sponsored Temporary Pedestrian Street.

Shore Fest continues to evolve as a showcase for the potential of Shore Boulevard as a
multi-use public space. Shore Fest is a place to meet new people, enjoy old friends, and
carve a river of life out of a car-filled street.

Monday Link - “Semi-secret” Astoria Park and Gantry Park [WHA][Jaunted]

Forget Central Park and Pack a Picnic for These 6 Semi-Secret NYC Parks

Monday Linkage
 and More [WHA][Jaunted]

“Semi-secret” Astoria Park and Gantry Park [Jaunted]

Astoria Park, Queens

Pros: Location on the East River between the Triboro and Hell Gate bridges means picturesque vistas, lots of grass and hills, public sports facilities (including a massive, art deco public pool).
Cons: Far out from Manhattan, at the end of the N/ [Q]x trains (Astoria-Ditmars stop) and then a 20-minute walk towards the East River.
Who should go: anyone with a love of NYC history and infrastructure, families, runners/joggers, and tourists looking to sample of the awesome Greek food

Gantry Plaza State Park, Queens

Pros: Some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline to be had, cool historic Pepsi-Cola sign and gantry docks, fishing and sightseeing piers, near the water taxi, wooden chaise lounges and adirondack chairs, summer evening free film festival.
Cons: Can be hard to reach on the weekends if the 7 train is skipping Long Island City stops.
Who should go: Couples, runners, walkers, sunbathers, picnickers.
