Celebrating Our Dirtiest Volunteers

Our parks and gardens volunteers are some of our most dedicated workers. They shovel compost, plant bulbs, remove tree stumps, pick up trash, then shovel more compost. Their time and work is extremely valuable to the Parks Department which is often understaffed. So last night we wanted to thank them for all their hard work, since most of our environmental projects are wrapping up for the year.

Volunteers, Team Leaders, and our Community Partners met at Thompkins Square Park yesterday to do some planting before the party began. (We figured we should put them to work a little bit before the reward). Many park goers came by to ask what we were doing, and even thanked the volunteers for their hard work. A young boy even came over and planted a couple bulbs. He was excited to come back in the spring to see them bloom.

Afterwards, the group headed to a bar in the area, where free drinks and pizza were provided. Our Program Managers loved putting faces to the names behind the people they email all the time. A couple volunteers even told me they had read some of the blog posts I wrote, and it was nice to meet the person who posts on our social media channels all the time.

This was our first appreciation party for environment volunteers, and everyone really appreciated being recognized. As one volunteer put it "you don't do this to be recognized, but it still is nice to be recognized like this."

There are environmental projects through the rest of the month
so search for "environment" on the search tab, or sign up
to get to work this weekend.
