What is Earth Hour?

  • Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by WWF. Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. 
Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement.

The first thing anyone can do to get involved is to turn off their [non-essential] lights on Saturday.
Visit Astoria Park at 8:30, enjoy the Greeting Garden and views.

APA Volunteer Days are an expansion of our already great partnership with NY Cares and in response to the large amount of requests we get from the public to volunteer in Astoria Park. Volunteer opportunities average twice a month, March through November.

Constantinides Unveils Participatory Budgeting Ballot

Astoria, N.Y. - Residents of the 22nd Council District will have the opportunity to vote on how to spend $1 Million on projects throughout the neighborhood. They will get to choose their favorite five out of a ballot of eighteen project proposals.
A sample of the finalized ballot was introduced today (click to see ballot).

What happens when?




Project Expos: February-March 2015  Delegates present draft project proposals to the community and get feedback, with which they revise the projects. 
Community Vote: March-April 2015  Residents vote on which projects to fund at voting sites throughout the district.

Implementation & Monitoring: April 2015 onwards
The Council Members submit their spending priorities to the City Council’s Finance Division, including the winning PB projects, for inclusion in the City budget. Community members evaluate the process, and oversee the implementation of projects. 
Research and Evaluation happens throughout these stages, 
to improve the process for next year.

10:30 am to 12 Noon

Meet behind the Astoria Park Field House across from the track 
Suggested attire: Closed toe shoes and long pants for gardening

Our first Volunteer Day will be Saturday, March 7th from 10:30am-12pm

We will be prepping the park for springtime and visitors by raking up last years leaves.  Meet up at the back of the field house (near tennis courts).  APA will provide gloves, tools and training.  Please come in close-toed shoes, ready to work outdoors. 


** Please note that all details are subject to change and 
needs of the day. **

Our GOAL is to rake leaves so that the lawn can return.
Unraked leaves will deprive the grass of the sunshine it needs to grow!

Astoria Park, our green space heart.  <3  This of course is in addition to the
much needed care done by the NYCParks and staff. We appreciate the gardening,
weeding, debris removal, mulching, bench painting, and many other park activities
done for love of the environment and of the community.

Start giving back in your community and make a difference.

STEP 1: CREATE AN ONLINE ACCOUNT
Get started by setting up your own New York Cares account. You will be able to use
this account to register for volunteer opportunities, view your upcoming projects, and
evaluate ones that you've already done!

STEP 2: ATTEND ORIENTATION
You can then learn more at your New York Cares orientation. We run dozens of orientations
every month throughout the city. At orientation, you'll learn how we work and what you
can do as a volunteer.

STEP 3: SIGN UP FOR A PROJECT










After you've been to orientation, you can get started signing up for projects.
Search online and find the best project for you!

PLEASE NOTE: You must be at least 18 years old to participate in New York Cares year-round volunteering.
