    Environmental & Social Impact



    Bike New York is going green, and we’re doing it big. For the 37th Annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour, we are applying for sustainability certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. Events certified by the Council have demonstrated a commitment to decreasing their environmental impact, while increasing their positive social impact. The Tour will be the “first major, sustainable sporting event in New York [City].”
    As part of the application process, Bike New York is implementing the following initiatives:
    Procurement
    <>
    • More than 50% of the food distributed at the Rest Areas will be either local, organic, or sustainably-sourced.
    • At this year’s Finish Festival, we’ll showcase local and sustainable food vendors, like Bareburger.
    Resource Management
    • We’ve eliminated more than 4,400 gallons-worth of water bottles from rest areas, instead relying on a partnership with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection to supply NYC drinking water to thirsty riders.
    • All leftover food from rest areas along the route is donated to City Harvest, a food rescue organization dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women, and children.
    • The average city diverts 14-17% of its waste from landfills. Through a robust recycling and composting program (to be undertaken in partnership with Grow NYC, the Lower East Side Ecology Center, BIG!Compost, and Earth Matter), we aim to divert 60% of our waste from landfills.

    How you can help:
    • Adhere to recycling and composting policies at rest areas and at the Finish Festival.
    • Find a Green Team volunteer at the Finish Festival and give them your Tyvek bib to be recycled.
    • Tell your friends about Bike New York’s sustainability initiatives.
    • Volunteer to be a part of our Green Team. Check here on February 1, 2014 to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

    Robert F. Kennedy Bridge

    The ramp to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge from the FDR Drive will be closed between 
    8 a.m. and noon. All Manhattan-bound traffic must exit at 125th Street.
