Know Before You Go

What to Bring Make sure you have a sturdy combination lock when you head out to the pool. It will keep your valuables safe, and let you hit the water feeling more secure about your belongings.

What Not to Bring

You’ll need to leave food, glass bottles, electronic devices, and newspapers at home. Unbound periodicals tend to blow around and create litter, food can be messy to clean up after, and there’s too much water around to make sure your electronics stay safe. Just to be on the safe side, we also recommend leaving valuables like jewelry and credit cards at home.

What to Wear




















You’ll need to have a swimsuit to enter the pool area. We may choose to check men’s shorts for a lining if we can’t tell if they are wearing a bathing suit. Feel the need to cover up from the sun? Throw on a plain white shirt or white hat and you’re set. We don’t allow shirts with colors on them on the deck.

    For everybody’s health, safety, and protection,  guests are  to observe the following rules:
  • Bathing suits must be worn on the deck and in the water. Men’s bathing suits must have mesh linings. Hats may be worn on the deck for sun protection but are not allowed in the water. Plain white T-shirts may be worn over bathing suits if desired. Sneakers are not permitted. Rubber flip flops or water shoes are permitted.
  • No urinating or defecating in the pools.
  • Children under 16 must be at least eight inches taller than the maximum water depth to enter the pool without adult supervision. Specific height requirements are posted at every pool.
  • No person will be permitted in the pool having: skin lesions, sores, or inflamed eyes, mouth, nose, or ear discharge, carrying communicable disease or having any type of bandage, adhesive tape, etc., on their body.
  • All bathers must take a shower in the locker room before entering the pool.
  • Patrons must provide and use their own padlock. No responsibility is assumed for lost articles. A standard master or combination lock is recommended. Small luggage locks are not permitted.
  • The use of swimming aids, water toys, and flotation devices is prohibited.
  • Electronic equipment, including radios, cameras, and cellular phones, is not allowed on pool deck.
  • Eating or drinking is permitted only in designated areas. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
  • Beach chairs, baby strollers, bags, blankets, or beach balls are not permitted on the pool deck. We will make our best effort to secure strollers.
  • Follow the directives of lifeguards, Parks staff, and the police.
  • Ball playing, running, jumping, using profane language or other forms of disruptive and disorderly behavior are prohibited.
  • No diving, except in designated areas.
  • No smoking, pets, or glass bottles permitted.
  • Books and bound periodicals are permitted on the pool deck. Newspapers are not.

Registration Process




















Lap Swimming

Online registration will be conducted starting at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, June 13 through Friday, August 28.
All participants must complete an online registration form. A season admission card will be issued to online applicants on the first day they participate in the program. All participants must check their admission card at the pool entrance each day. If the card is lost or stolen a replacement shall be issued. All swimmers must have a card to gain admission to the program. There is no charge.

 Please remember to remove all lights, ornaments, and netting before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. Mulch is available at the sites marked.




Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

This weekend, January 10 & 11 from 10am to 2pm, drop off your holiday tree in the Astoria Park parking lot. All trees will be chipped into mulch, which will be used in NYC's parks. Community members are also welcome to stop by and take home mulch for your own use. 
A gracious thank you to Bohemian Beer Garden for donating hot chocolate to be served from approximately 12:30-2pm on both MulchFest days.

NYC Parks Celebrates Another Year Of Recycling Christmas Trees At Mulchfest 2015

Trees collected at MulchFest will nourish parks and gardens across the city.

New Yorkers recently celebrated the 19th annual MulchFest by recycling their Christmas trees at over 80 locations across the city. NYC Parks, partnering with the Department of Sanitation, GreeNYC, and numerous community organizations, provides New Yorkers with the opportunity to sustainably recycle their trees. Participants were also invited to take a free bag of mulch home. 
Rather than turning Christmas trees into trash, New Yorkers were provided the opportunity to act sustainably and mulch their trees into wood chips. This year's MulchFest recycled nearly 30,000 trees. 
Not only will NYC Parks be counting recycled trees, this year we'll also be launching our Trees Count! 2015 tree census to count every street tree on every city block. For more information on how you can volunteer, visit www.nyc.gov/parks/treescount or call 311

Avoid Parks until day after snow blizzard update [NYC Parks]


Important NYC Parks Service Changes Due to the Winter Storm

Updated: Tuesday, January 27 at 12:30 p.m.
New York City parks are open as of 11:00 a.m. today, Tuesday, January 27. 
We continue to urge caution in parks under wintry conditions: parks paths can be slippery, snow cover can cover frozen lakes and bodies of water, and branches may have fallen. 
We urge people to stay out of parks and proceed with caution on tree-lined sidewalks in the event of falling trees or branches. To report downed trees or branches, please call 311. In case of emergency, please call 911.

Closures

  • Zoos will be closed for clean up, and will open tomorrow at normal hours.
  • Ice skating rinks will be closed today for clean up. They will open tomorrow with normal hours.
  • Other NYC Parks concessions will open at their discretion.

Heavy ice and snow can cause hazardous conditions in parks, including falling branches and treacherous frozen park paths. Attention Astoria Park Users: The park is so beautiful in the snow, but blizzard conditions will greatly increase the risk of falling tree limbs!

Go Bag


Every household should pack a Go Bag — a collection of items you may need in the event of an evacuation. A Go Bag should be packed in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. A Go Bag should be easily accessible if you have to leave your home in a hurry. Make sure it is ready to go at all times of the year.

In Conservancy Commitments To 

Community Parks

On Saturday, November 14, 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, announced a new comprehensive package of conservancy engagements to improve parks and open space in Community Parks Initiative (CPI) neighborhoods. CPI was launched in 2014 to revitalize historically underfunded community parks in neighborhoods with higher-than-average concentrations of poverty and growing populations. Through targeted contributions of funding and in-kind support, eight of the City’s conservancy partners will bring an influx of resources to CPI neighborhoods valued at $15 million through 2018.
“Every child deserves bright, green space right in their neighborhood – and this essential support from our city’s conservancies will help us make this a reality. I commend Senator Squadron for putting forward a proposal that sparked a critical conversation around how to improve smaller parks in less wealthy neighborhoods and engage the city’s park conservancies in that effort,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I want to thank all of our conservancy partners and their boards for their long-standing partnership with the city, which not only helps ensure some of our most heavily utilized and well-loved parks remain vibrant, but now also brings their resources and expertise to bear on our city’s neighborhood parks in need.”

Now the parks in CPI neighborhoods will benefit from additional resources thanks to conservancy contributions ranging from enhanced maintenance to new public programming, landscape and horticulture improvements, gardener training programs, design services and more from eight of the city’s leading park non-profit groups: the Battery Conservancy, Bryant Park Corporation, Central Park Conservancy, Friends of the High Line, Madison Square Park Conservancy, New York Restoration Project, Prospect Park Alliance and Randall’s Island Park Alliance.
Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, said, “We value the City's long-standing partnership with our conservancy partners and look forward to working together to not only promote the long-term vitality of our flagship parks but to develop new ways of bringing their expertise, resources, and passion to community parks where there is great need.”
The partnership between the City and these park non-profit organizations has been vital to ensuring that many of New York City’s most utilized parks are more vibrant today than ever. Their work over the years has supported enhanced maintenance, thousands of volunteers, dynamic programming and critical capital improvements in these parks through millions of dollars in private funding. Now these organizations will expand on their record of assisting community parks by dedicating resources and expertise to reviving park sites for New Yorkers who need them the most through the Community Parks Initiative.

Eight of the largest nonprofits supporting New York City parks will donate expertise, staff time, and cash to improve smaller parks under an agreement with Mayor Bill de Blasio's office, reports The New York Times.
The deal, valued at $15 million, complements a $285-million City Hall effort launched last year to steer resources into rebuilding and renovating scores of green spaces and recreation areas in low-income communities. The Central Park Conservancy, Friends of the High Line, and the Prospect Park Alliance  are among the major park groups that signed on to the pact, which runs through 2018.
