Rally for Parks and Community Gardens at City Hall!

Come to NY4P's rally at City Hall with the mayoral candidates!

Join New Yorkers for Parks and fellow open space advocates from every borough
as we call upon the Mayoral candidates to make parks and gardens an election-year priority.
We’ve invited the candidates to present their plans for the
city’s parks and open spaces on the steps of City Hall –
be the first to hear what they have to say about this important issue!
And bring your friends, neighbors, colleagues, family members –
anyone who cares about NYC's open spaces.

When: Thursday, August 15th at 11:00 AM
(Please arrive 15 minutes early to go through security.)
Where: City Hall Steps

The first 50 attendees before 11am will receive a free parks t-shirt! 
Please bring a sign with the name of your favorite park or garden – 
or come early to make one onsite!

One of the goals of increased community involvement
in the planning and execution of Shore Fest is being
realized this year with the inclusion of
additional community partners.

This is an important  milestone in the growth of
Shore Fest as a  community building project and
in the creation of stakeholders in re-imagining the
use of Shore Boulevard.

This year, two of the communities brightest stars,

We Heart Astoria and Build It Green, will bring their unique sensibilities to the event. 
 August 4th is We Heart Astoria Food Fest, August 11 is Build it Green Day.
 They join valued partners the NY City Parks and Recreation Department 
 and Green Shores NYC. Shore Fest is an NYC Dept. of Transportation 

 Sponsored Temporary Pedestrian Street.

Shore Fest continues to evolve as a showcase for the potential of Shore Boulevard as a 

multi-use public space. Shore Fest is a place to meet new people, enjoy old friends, and 

carve a river of life out of a car-filled street.

[Update - Many thanks to our over dozen volunteers and volunteer lead from NYCares and APA. The park staff have been working very hard. And all helped to remove about 20 bags of garbage. Keep Astoria Park Clean. Happy Holidays.] Please join the Astoria Park Alliance in volunteering to help care for the Park on  Saturday, July 6th. See you then! We gladly provide gloves for volunteer park efforts. We also recommend to wear closed toe shoes. Volunteers that are high school age should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. With many smaller capital projects, the parks department is often constrained by the preferences of City Council members and borough presidents.

“No park system has all the money it wants to fix up everything, but New York’s parks have had a level of investment that dwarfs that of some other cities put together,” Mr. Benepe said.

Others insist that in a system with 1,700 parks, more capital financing is needed.

“Compared to other boroughs, we did O.K.,” said Mr. Spiegel, the retired parks official in Brooklyn. “But when you scratch below the surface, there are serious infrastructure problems.”
