Important NYC Parks Service Changes Due to the Winter Storm

New York City parks are open as of 11:00 a.m. today, Tuesday, January 27. 

We continue to urge caution in parks under wintry conditions: parks paths can be slippery, snow cover can cover frozen lakes and bodies of water, and branches may have fallen. 

We urge people to stay out of parks and proceed with caution on tree-lined sidewalks in the event of falling trees or branches. To report downed trees or branches, please call 311. In case of emergency, please call 911.

Closures

• Zoos will be closed for clean up, and will open tomorrow at normal hours.
• Ice skating rinks will be closed today for clean up. They will open tomorrow with normal hours.
• Other NYC Parks concessions will open at their discretion.

Winter Storm Alert

Due to the winter storm, NYC Parks will close this afternoon at 6:00 p.m., effective until further notice. Closures include all parks and recreation centers. Heavy ice and snow can cause hazardous conditions in parks, including falling branches and treacherous frozen park paths. Attention Astoria Park Users: The park is so beautiful in the snow, but blizzard conditions will greatly increase the risk of falling tree limbs! 

Please keep yourself, your children, and your pets safe. Stay tuned to a reputable weather source, and wait until the storm is over. Also, post-storm, the Park Rangers will identify dangerous areas with yellow tape. Please avoid dangerous and icy areas. Your safety is most important to us!

Go Bag

Every household should pack a Go Bag — a collection of items you may need in the event of an evacuation. A Go Bag should be packed in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. A Go Bag should be easily accessible if you have to leave your home in a hurry. Make sure it is ready to go at all times of the year.

Astoria Park is one of the few spots in the City of New York where it’s kosher to let your canine pal off the leash for awhile, if the time is prior to 9 am or after 9 pm. Accordingly, a group of the neighbors regularly show up to let the pups be pups and doff their leashes.

New York Cares Day Spring will engage 4,000 volunteers in revitalization work in 70 parks and gardens throughout all five boroughs. This year is the 20th anniversary of the event!

Date: Saturday April 12th   

Volunteers should bring plenty of water and a bagged lunch. They should also wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that they do not mind getting dirty.

Take part in New York City's biggest spring cleaning event by joining more than 4,000 volunteers on Saturday, April 12th, as we get our hands dirty in parks, community gardens, and public spaces throughout the city. Volunteers will remove invasive species, pick up litter, repaint benches, plant, and clear out old growth from our urban green spaces. It's a great opportunity to discover a new park, meet a community gardener, and learn more about the importance of open space and recreation while making a real difference in the community. This event is generously sponsored by HSBC Bank.

Become a Team Leader by creating a team of 5 to 50 people, and then encouraging your friends, family, co-workers, or anyone else to join that team.  Team Leaders will be able to select their sites in March.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: 
In order to ensure that Astoria Park is maintained properly, Jules Corkery, co-chair of the Astoria Park Alliance , works with all city agencies, including the Parks Department, to ensure necessary services are carried out.

Expanding from south of the Triborough Bridge to north of the Hell Gate Bridge, the park is close to 60 acres. The Astoria Park Alliance is entirely made of volunteers and not only works to maintain the park, but works to hold activities there.

BACKGROUND: 
Corkery, originally from Maine, moved to Astoria in 2003 and immediately fell in love with the neighborhood. Aside from working with the Alliance, Corkery enjoys bird watching and gardening.

INSPIRATION:
Corkery’s love of the park stemmed from her bird watching hobby. The park is home to a variety of birds, including red-tailed hawks. When Corkery spotted the animals, she became inspired to make sure that the park was safe for them.

FAVORITE MEMORY: 
Corkery says she looks forward every year to the local Girl Scout Troop #4301 helping out on “NY Cares Day,” held on April 20. “It’s always great to see them come out and take part in the day,” she noted.
Corkery said the tradition will continue this year and is anticipating working with the local troop.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: 
For Corkery, reaching a diversity of volunteers is the most difficult challenge for the Alliance.
“How do we overcome the language and cultural barrier? We live in Queens, which is one of the most diverse boroughs.”
The Astoria Park Alliance creates activities such as arts and crafts to get different people involved and is constantly coming up with new techniques.

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. is asking the Parks Department to create an ice rink in the pool, similar to the work it did at the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn and the planned rink in Washington Heights.

“This area in the Astoria Park Pool would make an ideal ice rink for the residents of Queens to enjoy during the winter months,” Vallone (D-Astoria) wrote in a letter to Parks Commissioner Veronica White. “I ask that you study the possibility and consider issuing requests for proposal from parties that may be interested in a concession agreement.”
