Cycling is a zero-emissions activity, but a large-scale ride like the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is not. That’s why, in 2014, we implemented initiatives to make the Tour as green as it can be and to set the bar high for sustainably produced events.

The task was a momentous one, and required the support of numerous City agencies and nonprofits and the help of thousands of invaluable volunteers. As a result of our efforts, the Tour was awarded Silver-level certification by the Council for Responsible Sport, a nonprofit that recognizes sporting events that promote and demonstrate environmentally and socially responsible measures that help reduce the environmental footprint within the event’s host community.

In order to be certified, Bike New York has:

• Partnered with the New York Restoration Project to plant trees in Astoria Park, a rest area along the route of the Tour.
• Worked with Grow NYC, the City of New York Department of Sanitation, and the NYC Composter’s Project to divert 83.9% of waste from landfill.
  • 10.3% of waste was composted.
  • 73.6% was recycled.
• Collaborated with the City’s Department of Environmental Protection to provide fresh NYC drinking water, thereby eliminating the use of more than 4,400 gallons worth of bottled water.
• Provided cyclists with an eco-friendly Rider Identification Kit, with an UltraGreen bike plate, reusable helmet cover, and Tyvek bib.
• Produced 3,000 organic cotton T-shirts for staff and volunteers.
• Donated all leftover food to City Harvest, a local nonprofit dedicated to feeding New York’s hungry.
• Partnered with a local, 100% wind-powered vendor to print all 35,000 Tour Programs on 100% Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper.

Our hope is that this certification will encourage other organizations and events to join us in going green. The Tour is the first event in New York City to be certified, and we look forward to the day when being sustainable is the rule, not the exception, and certification is a thing of the past.

35 mile -- East River Loop  This route is ideal for riders looking for more than a Sunday stroll. The route travels through historic Downtown Brooklyn, around idyllic Prospect Park, through the artistic enclave of Williamsburg and follows the East River all the way to Astoria Park in Queens. Route begins in Central Park at 7:30 am or in Prospect Park at 8 am. Finish between 11 am and 3 pm.

55 mile -- The Waterfront  This route increases the mileage, but with New York’s relatively flat terrain, it is a manageable route for a rider looking to challenge themselves. This route takes riders through waterfront views along the Brooklyn Greenway, including the majestic Verrazano Bridge and the famous amusements at Coney Island. The route eventually re-connects with the 35-mile route to the finish. Route begins in Central Park at 7 am or in Prospect Park at 7:30 am. Finish between 11 am and 4 pm. 

75 mile -- The Rockaways  This route is not for amateurs. Riders travel out to Far Rockaway, Queens and beautiful Fort Tilden Beach. The route takes riders along miles of Queens greenway, through the serene, car-free Forest Park and up to Kissena Park, before cutting west through northern Queens to Astoria Park. Route begins in Central Park at 6:30 am or in Prospect Park at 7 am. Finish between 12 pm and 4 pm. 

100 mile -- The NYC Century  The full 100 mile tour is for experienced bicyclists only. - See more at: http://nyccentury.org

Registration for the 6th Annual Tour de Queens starts.

This year the Tour will start and end on our waterfront in Astoria Park.

The Tour de Queens is a fun-filled, family-friendly 19 mile bike tour, held every year in early July. 

The route changes every year in an effort to highlight different neighborhoods of Queens.
